Misted glazing: why it happens and what to do
A double-glazed unit is two panes separated by a spacer bar and sealed all round. The gap holds dry air or an insulating gas such as argon.
Over the years the seal can fail. Moisture then gets between the panes: this is internal condensation, which no cloth can remove. The unit insulates less well and the mist returns with every temperature change.
There is no lasting repair: the unit has to be replaced. The good news is that the frame can almost always be kept.
Mist on the room side? That is not the glazing but condensation from indoor humidity. Regular airing and heating often solves it.
Ug value and comfort
The Ug value measures how much heat passes through the glass, in W/m²·K. The lower it is, the better the insulation.
Old double glazing from the 1980s–1990s sits around 2.8 to 3. Recent low-emissivity double glazing with argon is around 1.1. Triple glazing reaches about 0.5 to 0.7.
Before moving to triple glazing, we check that the frame can take a thicker, heavier unit: rebate depth and hardware are checked when measuring.

How the replacement works

- Made to measure — The unit is manufactured to the exact measurements taken by the technician.
- Fitting — Old unit removed, new one fitted with setting blocks and glazing beads, opening and seal checked.
Indicative prices
The price depends on surface area, glass type (double, triple, laminated outer pane for security) and access. That is why it is confirmed from a photo before the job. The price quoted is the price invoiced.

Frequently asked questions
Can mist between two panes be removed?
Not permanently. If the mist is between the panes, the seal has failed. The unit must be replaced; the frame is usually kept.
Can I switch from double to triple glazing in my existing frame?
Only if the rebate is deep enough and the hardware can take the weight. We check this when measuring before offering that option.
How long does fitting take?
It depends on the size of the unit and on access. Fitting time and manufacturing time are given with the quote.
