Before you call: how to unblock a sink yourself
Not every blocked sink needs a plumber. If the water still drains, even slowly, the blockage is usually close by. Stop running water, don't start the dishwasher (it empties into the same waste), then try these in order:
- Remove standing water — with a cup or a pan, so whatever you pour in reaches the blockage.
- Washing-up liquid and hot water — a good squeeze of washing-up liquid down the plughole, then a litre of very hot water; leave it a few minutes. It helps with grease.
- Bicarbonate of soda and vinegar — half a cup of bicarbonate of soda, then a cup of white vinegar, cover the plughole with a cloth, leave for 30 minutes and rinse with hot water. Fine for a slow drain, rarely enough for a real blockage.
- The plunger — block the overflow, or the second bowl of a double sink, with a damp cloth, seat the plunger flat and pump firmly about ten times.
- The trap — bucket underneath, unscrew it by hand, clear out the debris, rinse it and refit it with the washers in place.
Best avoided
- Boiling water on plastic (PVC) pipes: it can warp pipes and seals. Very hot water is enough.
- Chemical drain cleaners with caustic soda or acid, or mixing products: they damage seals and make the job dangerous if they're left sitting in the sink.
- A coat hanger or screwdriver: it can puncture a plastic pipe or pack the blockage further in.
Trap clean but the water still won't drain, water comes up in the shower when you empty the sink, or the blockage comes back after a few days? It's further down the pipe: don't force it, call us. Each step is explained in our guide blocked sink: what to do.
What blocks a sink or basin
Kitchen sink: fat, coffee grounds, food scraps
Cooking fat sets as it cools and traps coffee grounds and food scraps. The blockage forms in the trap or the first metres of waste pipe.
Dishwasher or washing machine not draining
They are often connected to the sink trap. When it's blocked, the appliance stops draining and looks broken. We check the waste before blaming the appliance.
Basin and shower: hair and soap
Hair wraps around the pop-up waste and holds soap and toothpaste. We take the waste out, clean it and use the drain snake if needed.
Sinks in shops and nurseries
Restaurants, shops, offices and nurseries: we plan the job to keep disruption to a minimum during opening hours. We've already been called out to a nursery's sink.
How we unblock your sink: trap, drain snake, full-flow check
A photo under the sink or a short video of the water draining helps us locate the blockage before we set off. On site, we remove and clean the trap, run the drain snake down the waste pipe to the blockage, refit everything and check it drains at full flow, dishwasher included. If the blockage comes back, a camera in the pipe shows the cause, with the price given first.
How much does it cost to unblock a sink in Luxembourg?
The price depends on where the blockage is (trap or waste pipe), access under the sink and the time of day. A dirty trap is quicker than a fat plug several metres down the pipe.
You always hear the total including 17% VAT before we travel, nights and weekends included. See our prices.
Stopping the sink blocking again
- No cooking fat down the sink: let it set and bin it.
- Wipe plates and pans with kitchen paper before washing.
- Coffee grounds go in the bin or the compost.
- A strainer on the plughole catches food scraps; on the basin and shower, it catches hair.
- Once a month, pour a litre of very hot (not boiling) water with a little washing-up liquid down the sink.

Frequently asked questions
What if the sink blocks again after your visit?
The job is guaranteed for 1 month. If the sink blocks again at the same point within a month of the job, we come back free of charge. Just call the same number.
How much does it cost to unblock a sink?
It depends on where the blockage is, access and the time of day. You get the price including VAT before we travel, and that's the price you pay.
My dishwasher won't drain – is it the sink?
Often, yes: it's connected to the sink trap. If the sink is draining badly too, it's probably a blockage. We check the waste before talking about an appliance fault.
Will bicarbonate of soda and vinegar do the job?
For a slow drain or a bad smell, often yes. Against a solid fat plug or something stuck in the pipe, no: a plunger and cleaning the trap work better. If nothing moves after that, call us rather than pouring in a chemical drain cleaner.
Can I unblock a sink with a coat hanger?
It's a common tip, but a straightened hanger doesn't reach far and can puncture a plastic pipe or pack the blockage tighter. A drain snake is made for the job. If the blockage is further down the pipe, call us rather than forcing it.
My sink and shower are blocked at the same time?
The blockage is probably in the shared drain, not the sink. Stop running water and see our blocked drain page.
Do you come out in the evening and at weekends?
Yes, 24/7. A surcharge may apply at night, at weekends and on bank holidays; it's part of the price we give before we travel.
