Shutter stuck open or closed: the causes
A roller shutter is a curtain of slats wound onto an axle in the box above the window. The curtain runs down two side guide rails and ends with a heavier bottom slat.
Most jams come from a handful of known faults:
- A slat has come out of its guide rail after a gust of wind or being forced.
- A frayed or broken strap, or a tired strap winder.
- A crank or gearbox with worn gears.
- A tubular motor that no longer responds, or limit settings that have drifted.
- Frost in winter, freezing the bottom slat to the sill.
Never force a jammed shutter by hand or by holding the switch down: you can bend the slats or burn out the motor.
Manual or motorised (Somfy and others)
On a manual shutter, the repair usually concerns the strap, winder, crank or gearbox. The parts are standard and are replaced in one visit.
On a motorised shutter, the motor is hidden inside the axle. Before concluding the motor has failed, we check the power supply, the switch or remote and the limit settings. We work on Somfy motors and other common brands.
Awnings
An awning that won't retract becomes a real problem when the wind picks up: fabric and arms can be torn off. Torn fabric, broken folding arm, faulty motor or crank: see awning repair.

Frequently asked questions
My electric shutter does nothing, what should I check?
Check the circuit breaker for the shutters, then the remote's battery or the switch. If the motor hums but the shutter does not move, stop: it may be mechanically jammed.
Can you repair a shutter after a break-in?
Yes. A forced shutter often comes with a damaged lock or window: the same team can secure everything.
