Before you call: how to unblock a toilet yourself
Stop flushing: every flush adds water to a bowl that isn't emptying, until it overflows. If the toilet is blocked but the water still goes down slowly, it's usually paper, and these steps may be enough:
- Close the isolation valve — the small valve on the supply pipe, behind or beside the toilet, if the cistern is still filling.
- Washing-up liquid and hot water — a good squeeze of washing-up liquid in the bowl, then a bucket of hot tap water. Leave it and see if the level drops.
- Bicarbonate of soda and vinegar — the old home remedy: bicarbonate of soda, then white vinegar, then hot water once it stops fizzing. It helps with paper, not with wipes or objects.
- The plunger — ideally a flanged toilet plunger: seat it flat at the bottom of the bowl and pump firmly, without splashing.
Best avoided
- Boiling water: the sudden heat can crack the ceramic.
- Chemical drain cleaners (caustic soda, acid) and mixing products: they don't dissolve wipes or objects, can damage seals and make the job dangerous if they sit in the bowl.
- A coat hanger, or the brush to push: you risk packing the blockage tighter or pushing a dropped object further down. Tell us instead, it changes how we work.
Nothing moves after plunging, water comes up in the shower, bath or sink when you flush, or several drains are blocked at once? The blockage is further down, in the shared drain: call us. See also blocked drain. Every fix, step by step, is in our guide blocked toilet: what to do.
Why the toilet is blocked
Wet wipes and too much paper
The most common cause. Wet wipes, even ones sold as ‘biodegradable’, don't break down fast enough and form a plug in the bend of the pan or just after it.
Something dropped in the bowl
A toy, toothbrush, bottle cap or sanitary product: a hard object wedges in the pan's trap. A plunger often pushes it further instead of bringing it out. It needs retrieving, not forcing.
Wall-hung toilet: object stuck in the outlet
On a wall-hung toilet, an object can lodge between the pan outlet and the connection in the wall. Sometimes the pan has to come off to remove it cleanly. We tell you first, with the price.
The blockage is beyond the toilet
If the toilet drains badly and other drains gurgle, the problem is in the shared drain or the stack. That's no longer a simple blocked toilet: see our blocked drain page.
How we unblock your toilet: plunger, toilet auger, pan off if needed
Tell us by phone or on WhatsApp whether the water goes down a little or not at all, and whether something fell in: sometimes advice is enough. On site, a professional plunger and a toilet auger clear the plug. If something is stuck in the outlet of a wall-hung toilet, we take the pan off, announced and priced first. Then we flush several times to check, clean up and explain what blocked the toilet. If the blockage comes back, a camera in the drain shows the cause, with the price given first.
How much does it cost to unblock a toilet in Luxembourg?
The price depends on the cause (wipes, an object), the type of toilet (floor-standing or wall-hung), access and the time of day. A wall-hung toilet whose pan has to come off is more work than a paper blockage.
You always hear the total including 17% VAT before we travel, nights and weekends included. See our prices.
How to stop the toilet blocking again
- Only toilet paper goes down the toilet. Wipes, cotton pads, sanitary products and cat litter go in the bin.
- A small lidded bin next to the toilet helps.
- If you use a lot of paper, flush twice.
- With young children, keep the lid down: most stuck objects are toys.

Frequently asked questions
What if the toilet blocks again after your visit?
The job is guaranteed for 1 month. If the toilet blocks again at the same point within a month of the job, we come back free of charge. Just call the same number.
How much does it cost to unblock a toilet?
It depends on the cause, the type of toilet and the time of day. You get the price including VAT on the phone before we travel, and that's the price you pay.
Can you unblock a wall-hung toilet?
Yes. If something is stuck in the pan outlet, the pan may need to come off. We tell you first, with the price.
When I flush, the water rises – what should I do?
Stop flushing and close the isolation valve so the bowl doesn't overflow. If the level goes down slowly, it's usually paper and a plunger may be enough. If it doesn't move, or water also comes up in the shower, call us: we're available 24/7.
What home remedies work on a blocked toilet?
The best known: washing-up liquid with hot water, or bicarbonate of soda followed by white vinegar. They help with paper or organic matter. They won't shift wipes or an object: for that you need a plunger, then a toilet auger.
Something fell into the toilet – can you get it out?
Yes, in most cases. Don't push it with the brush or plunger: the further down it goes, the harder it is to retrieve.
My toilet keeps running – is that the same thing?
No, that's a flush mechanism repair, not a blockage. See our toilet flush and wall-hung WC page.
