Door slammed shut: 5 steps before calling a locksmith
The door closed behind you and the keys are on the table. Take a breath. A door that has only slammed shut (not locked) can almost always be opened without damaging the lock. Here is what to do, in order.
- Price quoted = price paid
- Itemised invoice for your insurer
- Emergency: on site within 2 hours, anywhere in Luxembourg

1. Check that the door is only slammed shut
A slammed door is held by the latch, the small bevelled tongue that clicks in by itself. A locked door is secured by one or more deadbolts.
If you left without turning the key, the door is only slammed. That is the simplest and cheapest case.
If a child, a vulnerable person, a pet or a hob that is switched on is inside, call 112 straight away.
2. Check other ways in
- A back, garage or patio door left open.
- A ground-floor window on tilt (don't climb: a fall costs more than a locksmith).
- A neighbour, caretaker or property manager who may hold a master key for the common areas.
3. Look for a spare key
Think of family, a trusted neighbour, your landlord or your letting agency. In Luxembourg, many property managers keep a spare key for rented flats.
If the spare is more than twenty minutes away, compare: the trip may still be quicker and cheaper than a call-out.
4. The plastic card trick: only if you know what you are doing
Sliding a flexible plastic sheet between the door and the frame to push back the latch can work on an older door with some play.
On a security door, a recent apartment door or a tightly sealed door, it won't work and may damage the seal or paint. Don't keep trying.
5. What never to do
- Drilling or forcing the cylinder: an opening becomes a lock replacement.
- Levering a screwdriver between door and frame: the door and strike plate get bent.
- Calling the first number you find without asking for the price first: exactly the situation emergency-repair scams rely on.
When to call, and what to say
Call once other ways in and spare keys are exhausted. To get a fair price on the first call, tell us:
- slammed or locked;
- type of door (flat, house, security door);
- town and floor;
- if your battery is low, say so: we call you back at an agreed time instead of keeping you on hold.
Frequently asked questions
Can a slammed door be opened without damaging the lock?
In the vast majority of cases, yes: the locksmith works on the latch without touching the cylinder. Security doors or badly adjusted multipoint locks may need another technique, which we explain before starting.
Do I need a new lock after the door has been opened?
No, not if the door was only slammed and you still have your keys. Replacing the cylinder only makes sense if keys were lost or stolen.
My phone is nearly dead. What should I do?
Send a short WhatsApp message with your town and “door slammed”. We call back to confirm the price and arrival time, then you can switch off the screen to save battery.
Will the locksmith check that I live there?
Yes. We ask for ID or proof of address, after opening if necessary. This check protects every occupant.
