Roller shutter stuck: what you can check yourself
A few safe checks sometimes solve the problem. They also save us time if a technician needs to come.
Electric roller shutter stuck
- Is the shutter's circuit breaker on in the fuse box? A thunderstorm can trip it.
- Does the remote respond? Change the battery, or try the wall switch if there is one.
- Do the other shutters in the house work? If none move, it's a power supply problem, not the shutter.
- After several trips up and down in a row, the motor can cut out to cool down. Wait half an hour before trying again.
- In winter, is the bottom slat frozen to the sill? Wait for a thaw rather than forcing it.
Manual roller shutter stuck
- Is the strap frayed, out of its guide or caught in the winder?
- A crank handle that spins freely points to a worn gearbox.
- Is a slat sticking out of the guide rail? Don't pull on it.
Electrical safety: motor humming but the shutter not moving? Release the switch straight away, holding it can burn out the motor or bend the curtain. Before touching the box of an electric shutter, switch off its circuit breaker. Never open the motor: it gets adjusted or replaced.
Stuck up, down or halfway: what it tells us
Shutter stuck at the top
The curtain is rolled up in the box and won't come down. Likely causes: faulty shutter motor, upper limit setting out, broken strap, or slats jammed in the box.
Shutter stuck at the bottom
Bottom slat frozen, broken locks or clips on the curtain, motor failed. The home stays closed, but without daylight: we book the visit with you.
Shutter stuck halfway
Usually a slat out of its guide rail or a curtain running skewed, sometimes an object on the sill. The shutter stays stuck until the curtain is back in its rails: forcing it bends the slats.
Why roller shutters get stuck: common faults and repairs
A shutter can jam for electrical or mechanical reasons. These are the faults we repair most often.
- Slat out of its rail: raise the curtain, refit the slat, check the safety locks.
- Broken strap: replace the strap and, if needed, the winder.
- Worn crank or gearbox: gearbox replaced on a manual shutter.
- Broken or bent slat: replaced with an identical slat.
- Limit settings out: the shutter stops too early or strains at the end. We reset the motor's limits.
- Tubular motor dead: motor replaced, limits set, control paired.
Faulty shutter motor: Somfy, Bubendorff and others
We repair and replace electric roller shutter motors, including Somfy and Bubendorff. Before ordering a motor, we check the power supply, the switch and the settings: a motor that no longer responds doesn't always need replacing.
Battery and solar Bubendorff shutters have their own reset procedure, described in the manufacturer's manual. If that doesn't work, we take over.

How the repair works
- Video or photo — Film the shutter while you press the control and send the video on WhatsApp. It helps us find the cause and bring the right part.
- Price upfront — We give you the price of freeing the shutter before we set off, and the price of any part needed.
- Opening the box — Power off, access to the axle and mechanism, precise diagnosis on site.
- Repair and test — Shutter freed, part replaced if needed, full up-and-down tests.

Frequently asked questions
Can I free the shutter myself?
You can do the simple checks: breaker, control, strap. Avoid opening the box or forcing the curtain: a bent slat or burnt-out motor costs more than freeing it.
My Bubendorff shutter is stuck down – what should I do?
On a battery or solar model, first follow the reset procedure in the manual. If the shutter still won't move, send us a video: we repair Bubendorff motors.
Does the whole shutter need replacing?
Rarely. In most cases a single part is replaced: strap, slat, winder or motor.
Do you come at weekends?
Yes, 7 days a week. A ground-floor shutter stuck open can be prioritised for the security of the home.
