Roller shutter stuck: what to check before calling
Before someone has to come out, five minutes of checks are sometimes enough to get a shutter working again. They also stop you making the fault worse by forcing it.

Electric shutter
- The breaker: is the shutter circuit on in the fuse box? A storm may have tripped it.
- The control: change the remote's battery, or try the wall switch if there is one.
- The other shutters: if none work, the problem is the power supply, not the shutter.
- Thermal cut-out: after several runs in a row, the motor switches off to cool down. Wait 20 to 30 minutes and try again.
- Frost: in winter the bottom slat can freeze to the sill. Don't force it; wait for it to thaw.
Motor humming but nothing moving? Let go of the control. The shutter is mechanically jammed and the motor can burn out.
Manual shutter
- The strap: is it frayed, out of its guide or caught in the winder? Don't yank it.
- The crank: if it spins freely, the gearbox is probably worn and needs replacing.
- The guide rails: look on both sides for a slat sticking out or something blocking the way (plant pot, toy, leaves).
What not to do
- Push the curtain up or down by hand.
- Hold the switch down when the shutter is not moving.
- Open the box of a motorised shutter without cutting the power.
- Pull on a slat that has come out of its rail: it bends and then has to be replaced.
When to call
Call a technician if the checks did not help, a slat is out of its rail, the strap is broken or the motor does not respond at all. A ground-floor shutter stuck open is also a security issue for the night.
Film the shutter while you press the control: with that video, the fault can often be identified remotely. To get it repaired: roller shutter repair.
Frequently asked questions
My shutter stops halfway, why?
Often an obstruction in the rails, frost, or limit settings that have drifted on a motorised shutter. If it always stops at the same point with nothing visible in the way, the motor needs resetting.
Can I change the strap myself?
It is possible if you are handy: you need to open the box and reach the winder. Be careful with the winder spring, which is under tension.
